How to protect your brand and domain name online

Your brand exists online before you formally claim it. Domain names, social media handles, and Google Business listings associated with your company name can be registered by competitors, squatters, or disgruntled former employees before you secure them — creating confusion, reputational risk, and expensive recovery processes.

Domain names: register your primary domain (.com and .in at minimum) and defensively register the most likely variations (your brand name with common misspellings, .co.in, .org). This costs ₹1,000–2,000 per domain per year. Far cheaper than attempting to recover a domain that's been registered by a squatter who wants ₹1–5L for it.

Social media handles: claim your company name on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp Business, even if you don't plan to use all of them immediately. An unclaimed handle can be registered by anyone and used in ways that damage your brand. The cost is zero; the cost of not doing it can be significant.

Google Business Profile: claim your business listing at business.google.com. An unclaimed listing can be suggested by users, may have incorrect information, and leaves you unable to respond to reviews. A verified, managed listing gives you control of the first impression many prospects receive of your company.

Trademark your brand name: file for trademark registration under the Trade Marks Act as early as possible, ideally when the company is formed. Filing costs are modest (₹4,500–9,000 for individual/startup applicants depending on class); the protection is substantial. Trademark registration gives you the right to challenge anyone using a similar name in your category.

Monitor your brand online: set up a Google Alert for your company name. You'll receive an email whenever your company is mentioned online — which helps you catch negative mentions early, find PR opportunities, and identify anyone misusing your brand.
