How to build a keyword strategy for your industry that attracts the right clients

A keyword strategy is a list of the specific search phrases you want your website to rank for, organised by intent and priority. Without one, your content is random; with one, every article and page you publish is building toward a coherent position in search.

Organise keywords by intent. Informational keywords ('how to manage cash flow in a seasonal business') attract people researching a problem — they're not ready to buy but they're in your target audience. Commercial keywords ('outsourced CFO services India') attract people actively looking for a solution. Transactional keywords ('book a financial consultant Delhi') attract people ready to engage. You need content for all three stages, but your conversion focus should be on commercial and transactional terms.

Build your keyword list in three tiers: core service keywords (the 5–10 phrases that describe exactly what you do, e.g. 'business consulting for Indian founders'), problem-based keywords (the 30–50 phrases your clients use when searching for solutions to the problems you solve), and content keywords (the 100–200 specific how-to and informational queries you can create articles around). The how-to content in your website's resource section serves the third tier and builds authority that helps your core service pages rank.

Check search volume and competition using free tools: Google Keyword Planner (free with a Google Ads account), Ubersuggest, and the Google Search Console (if you have it set up). Prioritise keywords with meaningful monthly searches (above 100/month in India) and manageable competition (where the current top results are from small companies or generalist sites, not large established players).

Local qualifiers are your friend. 'Outsourced CFO India' is more competitive than 'outsourced CFO Delhi NCR'. 'HR consulting for manufacturers' is more specific than 'HR consulting'. Qualified, specific keywords convert better and are easier to rank for.

Track your rankings monthly. Use Google Search Console (free) to see which queries your site is appearing for, at what position, and with what click-through rate. Pages ranking on page 2 for good keywords are the highest-value optimisation targets — small improvements can move them to page 1 and generate significant traffic.
